Insurance can be confusing! Make sure to read your policy carefully and ask your agent if you have questions.
ADMIN-02 — THE INSURANCE POLICY LITERACY GUIDE
My health plan has a $2,000 deductible and I just hit it after surgery. Does that mean everything else this year is free?
Not quite - hitting your deductible means the plan starts sharing costs with you rather than you paying 100%, but you're likely not at $0 yet.
The number that actually gets you to fully covered care is your out-of-pocket maximum, a separate, higher number required on ACA-compliant plans.
Once your total cost-sharing for the year reaches that out-of-pocket max, the plan covers 100% of in-network, covered care for the rest of the plan year.
Your $2,000 deductible being met is real progress toward that number, just not the finish line itself.
