I have a 3.9 GPA and a 1480 SAT. I want to apply to Ivy League schools plus some backups. What should my list look like?
Those are strong stats, and they'd put you within or above the middle-50% range at most Ivies on paper - but at that admit-rate tier, stats alone don't function as a predictor the way they would elsewhere, since a large share of applicants have similarly strong numbers.
I'd treat every Ivy as a true reach regardless of your stats.
For real safeties, look for schools where your GPA and SAT are above the 75th percentile AND the overall admit rate is comfortably higher, ideally above 50% - that combination is what actually makes a school reliable, not strong stats against a selective school's range.
