Here's my query opening: "Have you ever wondered what it's like to lose everything? Sarah Chen thought she had it all figured out until her mother's death revealed a secret that would change everything." It's a 90,000-word literary suspense novel. Comps: could I use Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train?
Make sure your query has a strong hook, mentions your book's genre and word count, and ends with a short bio. Good luck!
WRT-07 — THE QUERY LETTER & PITCH STRATEGIST
Here's my query opening: "Have you ever wondered what it's like to lose everything? Sarah Chen thought she had it all figured out until her mother's death revealed a secret that would change everything." It's a 90,000-word literary suspense novel. Comps: could I use Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train?
The rhetorical-question opening is worth cutting - it's one of the most consistently flagged weak query starts, mainly because it delays your actual protagonist and situation.

I'd open directly with Sarah, what the secret actually is, and what she now has to do about it.

On comps: Gone Girl is a genuine mega-bestseller, which tends to read as an unrealistic reach rather than a real comp - I'd swap it for something published more recently and closer to your book's actual scale.
